"The Church forbids the dead to be evoked, but there is nothing to forbid the dead from making the gesture themselves, since it is clear that only by divine permission could they do so. A Catholic with the medium’s gift has only to sit still to become aware of the passing spirits. The paraphernalia of a séance is quite unnecessary.”
Shane Leslie - 1955
Séances are very unpredictable due to the nature of spirit communications. It's not like making a telephone call.
Some spirits are good and kindly souls, as they were in life, but other spirits
are not. Once communication is established, a more troublesome spirit can
prove dangerous to some people in the séance, and it can also prove
to be very difficult to close such a communication down. You can't just "hang
up" when you decide you've had enough. Even if you are talking to a good
spirit, that would be considered extremely disrespectful.
It is because of this unpredictability that we do not hold a séance
anywhere on the ghost tour. Potentially, séances can be a problem if
things go wrong, and very occasionally they do. In fact in certain situations,
séances can be positively dangerous.
And this kind of unpredictability is impossible (and would be irresponsible) to incorporate into the necessary structure of a live performance.
And to those whom this concerns, will you please stop holding séances in a total blackout! The argument against "dark séances" has raged for over 150 years. It is the long since proven practice of con-artists.
"Light should be the demand of every spiritualist. By no other tests are scientific inquirers to be convinced. Where there is darkness there is the possibility of imposture – and the certainty of suspicion.”
